Jabber
From Marketing Wiki
Jabber is a free open-source, instant messaging service. Unlike MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and AIM services which are proprietary and can only communicate with their own servers, different Jabber servers can communicate with each other. For example, Gmail Chat runs on Jabber. If you have a Jabber account at Jabber.org, your Jabber.org IM account can talk to Gmail IM accounts.
If you have a Dreamhost.com Web hosting account, you can run a Jabber server at your own domain name (e.g., example.com). So you@example.com could chat with any Gmail account or other Jabber account.
You can also build complex chat applications with Jabber. Me.dium.com is one example. You can also use a Jabber account to post to Twitter.
